To support students who have some worries

Students experience considerable stress, for example, studies, relationships with friends or families, and money, in their university life. Many students can deal with their pressure properly, but some students cannot deal with them by themselves and feel difficulties. Mental stress can profoundly affect studies and relationships, but teachers can determine this. They cannot care about all of their students, and if they support students, they can be rejected. However, your help can be huge mental supports and tips to fix problems for students. Your support can give students significant influences. If there are students with some worries, then do not hesitate to help.

Find signs that imply student problems
Students with some worries may show the signs below. These sometimes imply mental diseases. If you see these signs, then you should communicate with them face-to-face.


  • Rapid decrease of grades
  • Increase of absence and delay in classes
  • Forgets tasks, promises frequently
  • Depression, lethargy/unstable feelings
  • Strong anxiety, irritation
  • Aggressive motivation and strong anger for people around, cries suddenly
  • Social withdrawal
  • Changes of clothes or some other kinds
  • Big incidents on relationships (e.g., bereavement with family or close friend, rupture of important relationships for students)
  • Excess intake of alcohol or other kinds of drugs
When you talk with students
Consider about these points when you communicate with students who have some worries.

  • Meeting at quiet and privacy-secured places
  • If you think they have some worries, then tell them so, and ask them about their worries. Use your own words sincerely.
  • Listen to them with kind and inoffensive mind. Summarize their talk and communicate with them.
  • Check if they are in such conditions.
    -Poor sleep, waking up early, too much sleep, day and night reversal
    -No appetite
  • Ask them if they have talked to their friends or families or counselors about their problems.
  • You do not need to identify the way to fix their problems forcefully, and listening to them satisfies them.
How to recommend counseling institutions
If you recommend other counseling bureaus while you have not listened to students enough, then they sometimes feel like teachers do not think much about them. First of all, you should listen to them enough, and then you may introduce other bureaus with the following useful phrases.



  • “You should obtain considerable support.”
  • “I am not an expert; hence, you should meet experts.”
  • “Will you go to Kyushu University Center for Health Sciences and Counseling (CHC)? This is helpful for you.”
  • “CHC listens to you, thinks of ways to fix problems with you, and search proper counseling bureaus that meet your needs.”
If students do not want to take counseling
If you recommend other counseling bureaus while you have not listened to students enough, then they sometimes feel like teachers do not think much about them. First of all, you should listen to them enough, and then you may introduce other bureaus with the following useful phrases.



  • “Students think that this situation does not matter.”
    Some students think that medication and counseling are for people who have serious problems or hesitate to receive supports.
    -CHC can answer various counselings.
    -There are no differences between any problems, and you should take counseling before a problem becomes more serious.
    -They decide about the next counseling after the first counseling; thus, do not worry.
  • “Students have been to other counseling bureaus, and it was not satisfying.”
    -If students have been to other counseling bureaus, and it was not satisfying, then they may hesitate to visit.
    -There are various counselors; thus, let us go there one more time.
  • “Students worry that teachers and parents may know about the counseling.”
    -Some students worries that teachers and parents may know the counseling.
    -Parents and teachers would not know about the contents if you do not want to inform them; hence, you must be relaxed.

  • “CHC listens to you, thinks of ways to fix problems with you, and search proper counseling bureaus that meet your needs.”
If students decide to visit counseling bureaus
  • Please make appointments with CHC in each division.
  • Each has its specialities; hence, you should ask students about their problems and decide which division is good for them. If you cannot decide, then please call the Coordination Section at 092-802-6020.
  • You can make appointments smoothly if you notice some convenient days.
  • Teachers can accompany when students go there for the first time. If so, then please notice.
About security
  • We have to keep confidentiality about all the communication between clients and CHC. We cannot answer about the use of CHC, except that there is permission from students or an emergency occurred, for example, a fatal issue.
  • Some teachers ask us about students, but we cannot tell about it without their permission. If you worry about them, then please directly ask them. We can tell them that you want to know their situations; thus, please tell us.
